Nirona is a craft village about 40 km northwest of Bhuj in Kutch, best known for Rogan painting, a rare craft kept alive by one Khatri family for eight generations. It is also home to bell-metal makers and lacquer workers. Two hours is enough, between October and March.
Rogan comes from a Persian word for oil-based. Castor oil is boiled for hours into a thick paste, mixed with colour, then drawn onto cloth with a thin metal stick, never touching the fabric with the stick itself. The Khatri family has painted this way for generations, and their tree-of-life pieces can take months.
