Rolling tea estates across the Western Ghats, cool and misty in the mornings.

Munnar is a hill town in the Western Ghats of Kerala, surrounded by tea gardens on every slope. It is about 4 hours by road from Kochi. September to March is the best time, with cool, clear days; plan two nights so you are not rushing between estates and viewpoints.
Most of the tea around Munnar grows on the Kannan Devan Hills, planted in neat rows that follow every curve of the slopes. Early mornings are the best time to walk among the bushes, when mist sits in the valleys and pickers are at work.
The tea museum in town shows how the leaf is withered, rolled and dried, with a tasting at the end. Several estates also run short walks and factory visits.
Vegetarian South Indian food is easy to find in town.
